The best bit about my work is that every day is different. I might be teaching a year 7 class library skills in the morning and then giving a local history group a talk in the afternoon. In a term, I can organise school assemblies to promote reading, answer questions from obituary editors of the national press, design a new reading booklet, hunt out an obscure photograph for the development office and put together an exhibition for an outside talk.

Sometimes important authors or poets come to visit and share their work with the pupils. That can be a real privilege to watch a young writer blossom as the result of a visit you have organised. I also sit on endless committees, attend meetings and visit other libraries and archives.

The whole job is about communicating, whether it’s talking about a book, recommending an author, inputting into a meeting or giving a lecture. You have to be a confident speaker and enjoy meeting people. Not like the old image of a librarian in a twin-set going shush! The drawback is you can sometimes feel pulled in several directions at once. But as long as you are organised and prepared to be flexible, it always comes out right in the end.
