Fast and accurate replenishment of shelves is essential to the smooth running of libraries and provides an excellent insight to the operational aspects of libraries. Plus, it will give you a fitness workout that money just wouldn’t be able to buy. 

Often called paraprofessionals, as any proud librarian will tell you, shelving gives a good working knowledge of library procedures and can act as a springboard to apprenticeships and more senior library and information management roles. May require some evening and weekend work on a rota basis, making it the perfect job for aspiring librarians looking for paid employment to fit around study commitments.  

 

 Key responsibilities 

 

  • Replenishing and tidying shelves with library materials for the ease and benefit of users
  • Updating, creating and labelling journal and portfolios to aid fast retrieval of information
  • Maintaining computer records and collating statistics
  • Handling and fielding enquiries from library visitors and users
  • Caretaking the enquiries desk
  • Implementing library policies to creating a pleasant and professional working environment for all to enjoy.
 
Starting salary
Anything from £7 an hour upwards
Potential earnings
Could reach over £18,000 in a public or education library, potentially up to £22,000 or more in a law or professional library
Entry requirements
    Strictly speaking, no academic entry requirements. Good general education to GCSE standard or equivalent – literate and numerate for alphanumeric filing
Essential skills
Employers will often look for people with excellent interpersonal and communication skills that can demonstrate initiative, flexibility and commitment to service ethics. Would need IT proficiency and enjoy working without constant supervision.
Professional qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 in Information and Library Services
  • NVQ Level 3 in Information and Library Services
  • City & Guilds Progression Award in Library and Information Services.
