Being a children’s librarian is not just about story times and book talks. A children’s librarian will need to plan and organise lots of events for young people, create and promote books to make the children’s department of the public library an exciting place to visit for kids of all ages!

A librarian who works with children must be well-versed in children's literature — from toddler books to young adult novels, so loving everything from The Very Hungry Caterpillar to Harry Potter is essential in this job. 

Children's librarians select materials for the library's children's department, making decisions on which books and materials should be included in the children's and young adult sections of the library. 

A children’s librarian role may include seeking out authors and performers to bring books to life, even organising sessions outside of the libraries in local schools to encourage children and young people to visit their local library. 

It’s a varied role with a real need for some one who is flexible as a children's librarian can find themselves planning a preschool story time a young adult program the next and running a book club and a craft activities all in one day!
