You’ve got questions. It’s no disgrace. Have a look at some of these questions people
have already asked and had answered.
Q:
What's a great tip to get into the library Sector?
Do whatever work you can to get into the library sector. If that means volunteering to get experience, give it a go. That’s how many of the information services professionals started out.
Q:
How do I get on to an Apprenticeship?
If you're up for an apprenticeship you can use the National Apprenticeship matching service. This service is free to use and can open the doors to your career in libraries and information services.
All you have to do is visit the apprenticeships website (www.apprenticeships.org.uk/) and select apprenticeship vacancies. You can then register and search for any opportunites in your area or, if you fancy a change of scene, anywhere across the country!
Q:
What do employers look for?
"As a Community College, our requirements for the qualities needed by a librarian are perhaps slightly different to a librarian outside of a College environment. As well as the obvious qualifications and the ability to manage a budget, staff and a constantly changing stock, personality is key. We need people who are prepared to go the extra mile in making the Library an exciting place that learners and teachers want to visit and use as part of the whole learning experience. For that reason, we’re likely to be looking at someone who is the complete opposite to the stereotypical view of a librarian. They must be outgoing and full of ideas; they must be comfortable in vigorously encouraging academic staff and students of all abilities to cross the threshold of the library; they must be able to publicise what they have to offer to large groups of people and also be prepared to listen to what departments need and work with them to achieve it. Most importantly we need someone with high levels of energy and enthusiasm."
